LO3 introduction
1. analysis question - Q6 in exam paper worth 12, 15 or 16 marks. 4 marks for examples 12 marks for the write up. It will be your first long answer/essay questions. spend 20-23 min on this question (3 sides of A4).
2. topics - representation, genre, narrative, discus 1 of the four media languages (mis-en-sen, camera work, editing, sound)
LO3: Mise-en-scene Task 1
What does it mean? In film, mise-en-scène involves everything within the frame/ everything you can see:
- costume - what a character wears,
- props - only classed as a prop as it is handheld by an actor, location,
- lighting - high key i.e. bright connotations verisimilitude, low key i.e. dark connotations enigma. verisimilitude means when you make something look realistic, this 'creates' verisimilitude making it relatable , making it feel like its real.
- body gestures - how characters move
Denotations: literally what something is/ describe.
Connotations: what is inferred/ representing.
Find a film that you know well that has the following:
Male and female characters - stereotyped: common expected, and challenged: go against the norm.
Heroic protagonist and antagonist and princess/prince character
At least two different ethnicities

Costumes and colour connotations: The denotation of this costume is a white vest top and beige trousers this costume connotes that its being worn for comfort and practicality not style.
Props: no props.
Gestures: she reaches out towards switches even though there are explosion's and sparks surrounding her connoting she is a fearless and brave character. denoting that she's actively trying to solve the situation.
Lighting - low key lighting
Location: malfunctioning space ship, there is a tablet drifting through the space ship with red text saying 'emergency procedures' denoting to the audience this scene is showing the astronaut in an emergency dangerous situation connoted by the red typography on the tablet.

Costumes colour connotations : His beige coloured suit and neat hair connotes he's trying to present his self as smart and capable. The contrast of the cold tone colours of his monitor's to the warm toned colours of his desk and suit could connote he is separated/closed off from the outside world and is insted watching the world from afar.
Props : Rubik's cube - having this object in his hand connotes a stereotype of inelegance.
Gestures : his posture connotes concentration and power as he can overlook lots of things at one - this connotes he needs to feel he is in control, and that he is an outsider looking at the world around him.
Lighting - low key lighting
Location : his bedroom, rocket lamps and rocket themed images on multiple monitors connote he's interested in space/ rockets. The monitor above his head to the right links to the last scene as it is the same spaceship that was just shown in an emergency situation being attacked by something unknown, this is foreshadowing that he will be linked to this incident somehow.

Costumes and colour connotations: black patterned track soot connotes he wants to be perceived as sporty and stylish. The blue sky mural on the walls and ceiling connotes peacefulness. And the cream connotes calm.

Gestures: he is dancing this connotes that he is happy, energetic and carefree.
Lighting - high key lighting
Location: entrance hall with ceiling mural a double staircase, intricate fencing and ornate wooden paneling with coving this room very strongly denotes luxury as this is where he lives we can assume he is also very rich.

Costumes and colour connotations: ZhenZhen is wearing layers and allot of accessories connoting she cares about her appearance and wants to dress stylishly. The man next to her is dressed business casual connoting he is a put together person.

Gestures: ZhenZhen has an irritated look on her face with slouched posture connoting she is bored. The man next to her looks a bit clueless with his mouth open.
Lighting - high key lighting
Location: An airport desk getting her passport checked. crowded with people.
Introduction to camp ' Rim of the world ' 05:42
Costumes and colour connotations: his beige suit contrasts with his mothers and the background characters costumes connote they are much more relaxed and comfortably dressed people adapted for the environment around them, where as he isn't.
Props: leather gym bag suggesting he likes high quality and nicely made things.
Gestures: The mother is reassuring Alex with her arm around him in order to encourage him as they walk into camp.
Lighting - high key lighting
Location: The 'rim of the world ' wilderness camp. Its very busy with kids, family and camp staff. The focus on the entrance to the camp may connote a new start to this character.
