LO3 Genre theory
genre:
Genre is a way of categorizing a particular media types according to its content and style.
genre can be judged through the: generic conventions/ characteristics/elements or tropes
themes
specific codes and conventions that are expected by the audience
type of product
film genres: sifi,romance, Rom-com, comedy, horror, thriller, slasher,
e.g. horror
- monster / evil
- violence / blood
- jump scare - sound
- editing
- prince / princes character - needs saving
- derelict house vast open space
- low key lighting
The genre of my product: rim of the world is a sifi, action, comedy
sifi: aliens, space ships, a heroic protagonist, antagonist, fast editing, advanced technology - SGI ships winning the battle against fighter pilots when the kids are abandoned at the kanoo lake, fighting, nerdy/ smart character (Alex) - "EMP stands for electromagnetic pulse.",
action: explosions
Key theory : Barry Keith Grant, (1995) - All genres have subgenres (genre within a genre).
sub-genre in rim of the world: comedy
- Dariush is the 'funny' character in the film making multiple jokes such as "between me and you, i just turned the evergreens brown up in this joint" referring to him going to the toilet in the woods.
-there are multiple seance using slapstick comedy such as Alex falling off his bike and Dariush being hit with 'the dragon capsule' door
Key theory : David Bordwell (1989) - said ' any theme may appear in a genre'
the themes in my product :
- the character Dariush conforms to the stereotype of being rich as he is mean and expects everything to be done for him instead of doing it himself.
- The children in the film are heroic protagonist succeed in saving the world where as the adults as the c adults are shown as prunes characters with high angle shots, they don't succeed and instead die.
- The good vs evil stereotype of dark and light is conformed to by the mis en sen of the dark evil antagonist aliens and the brightly coloured heroic protagonist children.
- stereotypical location of things going wrong at a summer camp.
