what does the term 'representations' mean: the way aspects of society, such as gender, age or ethnicity, are presented to audiences through careful mediation.
media teaches us about people
mediation - can be influenced by historical events, representations have been purposefully constructed or set up to tell the audience a message. nothing on screen happens by accident, production techniques are used to purposely tell you a specific message.
theory: Tim O'Sullivan (1998) - said for representation to work , there has to be a shared recognition of people and places. All representations therefore have ideologies behind them. (quote the highlighted)
what messages and values (ideologies) does Rim of the world stereotype or challenge for the audience?
- the character Dariush conforms to the stereotype of being rich as he is mean and expects everything to be done for him instead of doing it himself.
- The children in the film are heroic protagonist succeed in saving the world where as the adults as the c adults are shown as prunes characters with high angle shots, they don't succeed and instead die.
- The good vs evil stereotype of dark and light is conformed to by the mis en sen of the dark evil antagonist aliens and the brightly coloured heroic protagonist children.

theory: Richard Dyer (1983) - said Audiences should question the representations they see in media texts.
- Zhenzhen the heroic protagonist subverts the female character stereotype by being less emotional than the males surrounding her. She's a person of colour in control. She subverts the stereotype by being a good driver and being powerful through the gesture of driving when the men can't . However she conforms to the stereotype of being wise and talking poetically as an asian character 'dialog example'.
theory: Laura Mulvey (1975)- said Women are objectified in media texts this is called the mail gaze
theory: Stuart Hall (1995) - said in western cultures those who are a minority ie person of colour is always mis represented i.e. 'the other', evil, barbaric, pitied, humoured.
-Dariush a person of colour in my movie is depicted as the comic relief making various rude jokes such as a moterboting joke towards a woman of colour that is also a humorous character as we pitie her low selfesteam. humour coping mechanism for distress.
theory: Earp and Katz (1999)Men have a pathological need for control and violence.
- army men with tanks and guns, thretening children with guns
